How Deep The Father's Love For Us
How deep the Father's love for us; how vast beyond all measure.
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss; the father turns His face away.
As wounds which mark the chosen one, bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon the cross, my sin upon His shoulders.
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished.
His dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything; no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.
"This Is Our God" by Hillsong United
This has been one of my favorite songs lately. One of the most meaningful lines to me is in the bridge where it says this:
"Freely You gave it all for us
Surrendered your life upon that cross
Great is Your love
Poured out for all
This is our God."
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
freely - adv.
a. of one's own accord - accord means "voluntary or spontaneous impulse to act"; God voluntarily acted to give His life and His Son, Jesus, to cover our sins, not because He had to but because He voluntarily did it because He loves us.
b. with freedom from external control - no one was forcing or controlling Him to do anything; it was His display of love and affection for us.
c. not strictly following a model, convention, or rule - He was not following some rule that the Lord had given Him and it wasn't written anywhere that this was something He had to do.
give - verb
a. to make a present of - Once you give someone a present, you don't take it back. In the same way, He gave us His life and it will never be taken from us (John 10:28-29).
b. to put into the possession of another for his or her use - He gave His life so that we could have eternal life in heaven with Him (John 10:10b).
all - adv.
a. the whole amount, quantity, or extent of - He gave EVERYTHING that He had for us .
surrender - verb
a. to give up completely or agree to forgo especially in favor of another - He gave up His life completely - all of it - for us.
great - adj.
a. remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness - 1 John 3:1a says this: "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" He calls us His own and we belong to Him, just as we belong to our earthly father.
poured - verb
a. to move with a continuous flow - His love for us never, ever ends; it always was, always is, and always will be. Jeremiah 31:3 says "I have loved you with an everlasting love."
